Air France KLM Flying Blue

Air France KLM Flying Blue Credit Cards

Flying Blue is the frequent flyer program of Air France-KLM, a member of the Skyteam alliance. There are a number of Flying Blue credit card options available to residents of the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.

Whilst Flying Blue is not renowned as the most generous frequent flyer program around, for those who are locked-in to travel on Air France KLM, these Flying Blue credit cards may help increase mileage earnings.

Award miles can be redeemed for flights on Air France/KLM, Transavia and other Skyteam airlines.

Below we will profile each card for the respective countries. We will also look at alternative options for UK and US residents.

AMEX Membership Rewards Alternative

Dutch residents could also consider one of American Express Membership Rewards cards where each €1 spend earns 1 Membership Rewards (MR) point. There are 3 cards available:

  1. Green (5,500 MR bonus points, €65 per year)
  2. Gold (12,500 MR bonus points, €150 per year)
  3. Platinum (20,000 MR bonus points, €700 per year)

The Gold card comes with 2 Lounge Club entry passes. The Platinum card offers free airport lounge entry via Priority Pass and other agreements.

Membership Rewards points (Netherlands) can be converted into Flying Blue Award Miles at a rate of 5:4. The minimum transfer is 625 points which converts to 500 Flying Blue miles.

The great advantage of holding Membership Rewards points is in their flexibility. MR points in the Netherlands can be converted into the following frequent flyer programs (MR Points:Airline Miles):

Alitalia Miles (5:4), Asia Miles (5:4), British Airways Avios (5:4), Delta Airlines Skymiles (3:1), Finnair Plus Award Points (5:4), Iberia Plus Avios (5:4), SAS Eurobonus Points (3:2) and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles (5:4).

One thing to note is that credit cards are not that widely accepted in the Netherlands. For day-to-day shopping most people will use their debit cards or cash.

 Flying Blue Credit Cards (UK/US)

There are NO affiliated Flying Blue credit cards available in the UK and US markets. UK and US residents could also consider one of the American Express Membership Rewards cards – transfer rates are actually more generous than the Dutch and French cards.

Membership Rewards points (UK) can be converted into Flying Blue Award Miles at a rate of 1:1. The minimum transfer is 500 points which converts to 500 Flying Blue miles.

Other UK airline partners for American Express Membership Rewards are:

Alitalia Miles (1:1), Asia Miles (1:1), British Airways Avios (1:1), Delta Airlines Skymiles (1:1), Emirates Skywards (1:1), Etihad Guest Miles (1:1), Finnair Plus Award Points (1:1), Iberia Plus Avios (1:1), SAS Eurobonus Points (1:1), Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles (1:1) and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles (1:1).

Membership Rewards points (US) can also be converted into Flying Blue Award Miles at a rate of 1:1. The minimum transfer is 1,000 points and always in increments of 1,000.

Other US airline partners for American Express Membership Rewards are:

Aeromexico Club premier Miles (1:1), Air Canada Aeroplan (1:1), Alitalia Miles (1:1), ANA Mileage Club (1:1), Asia Miles (1:1), British Airways Avios (10:8), Delta Airlines Skymiles (1:1), El-Al (100:2), Emirates Skywards (1:1), Hawaiian Miles (1:1), Iberia Plus Avios (1:1), JetBlue (5:4), Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer Miles (1:1), Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles (1:1), Virgin America Elevate (1:1).

Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG)

Finally, hotel chain Starwood offers the option of converting its SPG points into airline miles. The standard conversion is 1:1 – however if you convert 20,000 SPG points at a time Starwood will add an extra 5,000 bonus SPG points.

So every 20,000 SPG points would yield 25,000 Flying Blue Award Miles. Transfers are possible to over 30 airline partners.

American Express has SPG credit cards in the UK (10,000 bonus SPG points, £75 annual fee) and the US (up to 25,000 bonus SPG points, $65 annual fee).
